The City of Rome - Italy

The City of Rome - experience it, embrace it, adore it.

The 'Eternal City' has infinite possibilities and nonstop excitement. No wonder so many visitors are quick to proclaim their undying love for this Italian beauty. She's ravishing, so if you plan on visiting, brace yourself for one of the most passionate love affairs you'll ever have with a city.

In Rome you don't just see the sights, you experience them whole-heartedly. Darren and I let our imaginations run rampant as we toured the Vatican, The Colosseum, The Fontana di Trevi Fountain etc. We were speechless as we took in the sights, sounds and smells of this amazing city. We really spent our time in Rome with gusto.

Me and my scarf
Our tour bus stopped at the Vatican City first. The tour guide informed us that there were certain rules which needed to be adhered to with regards to dress code when entering the Vatican. Shoulders needs to be covered, no shorts and miniskirts were allowed. Well that was a problem for me as I was wearing a strapless jumpsuit err, because I didn't want a tan line, the tour guide said that it was okay as there were many people selling scarves outside the Vatican. She said we could bargain with them and that we shouldn't pay the full price. So I did, they wanted to charge 10 Euro and I managed to bring them down to just 2 Euro, so I learned that I'm not such a bad negotiator after all.

The Vatican is in fact the world's smallest independent nation and is home to the pope. The pope is not allowed to marry or have children. While the Catholic Church has been around for centuries, the Vatican only came into existence in 1929. The Vatican has a very high crime rate, crimes such pick pocketing etc. They also have their own currency. Darren and I marvelled at the detail of the sculptures and paintings inside the Vatican, some of which looked really creepy to me, I must admit. It was an interesting experience. There is tons of history inside the Vatican.

We were so excited to see The Colosseum. It is probably one of the most impressive buildings of the Roman empire. The Colosseum could accomodate 55 000 spectators, who could enter the building through no less than 80 entrances.

The Fontana de Trevi or otherwise known as the Trevi Fountain is the most famous and arguably the most beautiful fountain in Rome. Famous for its "tossing of a coin" the water at the bottom of the fountain represents the sea. Legend has it... you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the waters, by tossing the coin with your right hand over the left shoulder, with your back facing the fountain. Darren and I did just that. We would certainly love to experience Rome again.
